Carpenter and cook - Jasmine Road outlet closed wef from 28 March. One less good cake shop in the North area

I wasn't aware that this shop is slated for closure when i visited on 15 March 2016.  I guess next time if i want to try their nice desserts i will have to make a trip down to Alexandra or Bukit Timah instead. I've only been to first store at Lorong Kilat once in 2014 and i so so loved their Quiche.

I remembered that my gang of friends are brought to the Lorong Kilat outlet by a my friend when we visited her place at Bukit Batok ( i can still vividly remember the long ride from my home, sat on the mrt till my butt hurts). She told us that the chef graduated from Le Cordon Bleu in London. I was like WAH so cool! (p.s i just started to learn baking then) and Cordon Bleu is a highly prestigious culinary school. And in truth after tasting, all the cakes we tried are top-notch. Still i didn't manage to find my way back till that fateful day on 15 March to the now defunct Thomson outlet.

While i was there, most of the food is sold out and i was left with limited choice. I finally choose to have the lemon merigue cake and the white rabbit carrot cake with 2 Flat White.

I was a little surprised by the disposal cups for the coffee as i was hoping to admire some artwork but nevertheless its still a very decent cup of coffee.

The lemon meringue cake is drizzled with sugary lemon coating on top. Cake wise though fluffy but still denser than a chiffon cake.
Rated: 7.5/10

The carrot cake is refreshing and have very distinct taste from each ingredient like the nuts and carrots etc.
Rated: 7.5/10

There is limited seating space in fact we took up the only 2 available seats in the cafe. But this is to be expected since this place is meant to be a Takeaway store. As this place is quite inaccessible, parking was also an issue only 2 allocated lots for patrons. I am kinda of sad this place is gone but hopefully there will be more and better food in Thomson area to eat. >_<

P.S. my dear friend if you're reading when can we do something like we did back in 2014? its been a long time. bleah. ;P

Tendon Ginza Itsuki - Yummylicious and value for money

Tendon Ginza Itsuki is a collaboration of Ramen Keisuke and acclaimed Ginza Itsuki Sushi (mainly selling sushi) restaurant in Japan. It was 8th concept outlet under the Ramen Keisuke brand and was started in 2015.

I was quite doubtful if the name lives up to the hype. However, every time we walked past this place, there is always a long queue for it, so like all Kiasu Singaporeans we wanted to try for ourselves and see if its really that tasty.

While you are in the queue, the usher will pass you the menu and also take down your order even before you step foot in the premises.
There is only 2 options from the menu though: Special Tendon or Vegetable Tendon.

Special tendon comprise of prawns 2 pieces, chicken 2 pieces, half boiled egg, vegetables 4 prices ($13.90). Vegetable tendon is served as pumpkin, shitake mushroom, lotus root, eggplant, 4 other vegetable ($12.90). The price indicated is really very attractive.

Once inside the restaurant, it totally reminds me of dining in japan. The light coloured cabinetry, long bar table and stools where you can see what the chef is doing. Space here is also very tight with a seating of 24 pax (explains the queue).

We ordered the special tendon set and while waiting, helped ourselves to the pickled vegetables on the table.

At first glance, i thought that this pickled vegetable is going to be very spicy but after eating i realized its not spicy at all. In fact, it was very crunchy and refreshing.

First up is the steamed chawanmushi. I like the taste very much as it is glazed on top with pickled seaweed. There are also mushroom, gingko, naruto and chicken slice within the steamed egg.  I always have the pickled seaweed with porridge when i was young. So this dish brings back fond memories of the taste. Thumbs up for this!

I was literally wowing when the tendon is served. It was nicely topped up with various tempura and drizzled with a homemade sauce. For the vegetable tempura, we are given tempura mushroom, pumpkin, 2 long beans. The chicken breast is so tender and juicy after frying that i wonder if its really chicken. I wonder how they manage to get the chicken so soft and nice. All the tempura is well fried to thin crispiness. The flavours of the tempura mixed with the saurce is both salty and sweet and yet very delicious. The onsen egg with its runny yolk also brings additional flavour and texture to the dish.

This would one of the most satisfying meals i had for a while and what pleases me the most is the price is gentle on the pocket. I will rate this place a high 8/10 for all the positives i listed above.

Currently payment at the restaurant is only by cash so make sure your wallet is full of cash. Ka-ching$$$ As all the frying is done in the dining area, beware that the air is smoky, floors are a tad oily and you smell of the restaurant after leaving the restaurant.

I tried another Ramen Keisuke restaurant at Orchard Cineleisure which serves Ramen Crab broth but it wasn't a very pleasant experience but that's a story for another day.

PocoLoco - Another pasta mania in the making

We are always excited by new cafes that are set up within the neighbourhood. It always meant we have more food choices for dinner.

We visited PocoLoco within 2 weeks of reading it on a food blogger's write up. During ordering, we commented on the small servings and are assured that what is shown on the blog is a tasting session, the actual size is much bigger.

Fegato d'oca - Foie gras with truffle cream (S$10)

Rated: 5/10
The foie gras is soft and when cut the centre is raw and red. Imagine uncooked liver and this visualisation kind of turn me off but Mister is ok to finish up the dish. Taste wise i will give it a pass as the cream and black pepper sauce is yummy but doesn't really go well with the foie gras and there is too much oil drizzled on, giving it a very greasy feel.

Carbonara - Cream pasta with bacon (S$11)

Rated: 6.5/10
Tagliatelle is used in both the pasta dishes we ordered. I thoroughly enjoyed this dish as it has the right amount of cheese and cream that makes it not to overwhelming that one person cannot complete the dish on her own. For choice of pasta, i would have preferred spaghetti be used in this pastas as i find tagliatelle a little tough in texture compared to a spaghetti. But the flavours are there in this dish, it was well mixed, the cream, the bacon brings out the best of what a carbonara should be.

Granchio - Crabmeat in pink sauce (S$12)

Rated: 6/10
Mister ordered the Granchio. I was having high expectations for this dish as highly recommended in the blog but upon tasting both pasta dishes. Granchio actually pales in comparison to carbonara. I might be biased as i am always a cream pasta person. Although i will classify this as a cream tomato base. Much crab meat is mashed and torn and mixed in the sauce is very flavourful (taste like seafood soup broth). I will prefer to have this in soup rather than a pasta.

Creme Brulee - egg custard with hard burnt caramel (S$5)

Rated: 4/10
This is the worse dish by far. The dessert is very thin and flat and the top caramel crust though thin is hard crystalised sugar. Biting it taste like chewing on a sweet. The egg custard is extremely sweet and eggy. Deeply disappointed.

This is a simple unassuming place and is good to try for its pasta and who knows it may be another pasta mania which provides good and reasonably priced pasta.
