I been to Antoinette once in a while but usually when i had a craving for french food. They do serve quite decent and nice food from the few times i've visited the Penhas branch.
Antoinette is the tea salon established by the Sugar
Daddy Group, helmed by award winning pastry chef Pang Kok Keong. Named
after the last queen of France, this cafe offers meticulously crafted
cakes, French pancakes, sandwiches, and main courses. I always like the very neoclassical style of the place especially the uniquely tin plated ceiling.
Today, i visited this place for the sole purpose of trying out their salted egg yolk croissant. Business was brisk and most people at the counter are eagerly awaiting for the piping hot croissants that just came out from the kitchen. As the people in front of us ordered like 10 croissants and the entire tray was wiped out, we thought with a sinking feeling there goes our chance to try it. Fortunately, for us, this is our day. We requested to dine in but have to return the table by 1.30 pm. As we have a good 2 hours to enjoy our meal, we happily agreed.
if you order 10 croissants sir, what happens to the rest of us? |
As MR is reluctant to share the croissant (since it was ranked top by one food blogger), we ordered one croissant (S$6.50) each. The croissants are served hot and the buttery baked aroma is making us salivate.
Putting the fork through the croissant, the crust is crispy and flakes off. The golden yolk oozes out from the croissant.
Salted egg yolk croissant, Rated: 6/10
Upon tasting, i like the flaky crispy texture but not so impressed by the yolk. Having eaten very finger licking golden custard salted egg buns, this yolk reminds me more of a moon cake. I will prefer for the yolk to be more robust and savory with a tinge of saltiness. Though, this is the only salted egg yolk croissant i tried, i think i will steamed golden custard salted egg buns is a better marriage.
Latte, Rated: 6/10To supplement our croissants we also ordered lattes, blinis with blueberries and maple syrup (S$13) and french toast with caramelised banana (S$13).
I was surprised when the latte is served, the cup is too dainty to ba a latte. I always like lattes to be served more traditionally, 240 ml with one shot espresso, filled with steamed milk and 12 mm thick of froth on top. For a cup this size, we are definitely missing the steamed milk and froth. Hrumph!
Blinis with blueberries and maple syrup |
As restaurants rarely served pancake with blueberries in the pancake, i was looking forward to trying this dish. But i was quite let down as the blueberries are bland and pancake tasteless. This is so even with the maple syrup and chantilly cream.
French toast with caramelised bananas |
French toast with caramelised bananas, Rated 6/10
The toast is quite well done though. Sweet and well toasted.
Footnote: Do try to go early to get the salted egg yolk croissants, a friend who visit the restaurant on the same day afternoon returned home empty-handed as the croissants have been sold out.
